WITH both clubs idle on Cup day as they await opponents to emerge from the unravelling of earlier rounds, they were able to play-off a league game postponed earlier in the season.

For Boroughmuir this was merely a chance to get back in harness aftADVERTISEMENTer the mid-season close-down. Hawks had theireyes on much needed league points. And it was the Anniesland club who showed that motivation with a five-point success that made a mockery of the weather.

Boroughmuir had first use of the conditions and immediately settled in the home 22. When referee Cammy Rudkin awarded a penalty to Muir in the fourth minute they chose to kick to the corner where they rumbled from the lineout, but the slippy ball was soon lost forward. However, in the seventh minute Muir took the lead with a penalty from Elgan O'Donnell with scrum half Calum Cusiter lying prone in old-fashioned way to hold the ball against the wind.

Minutes later Hawks landed in the visitors' 22 where they won the line-out. Pick and go took them to the line where prop Garry Strain burst over for Mike Rainey to kick a remarkable conversion from touch.

This improbable lead was further extended in 27 minutes. A Gavin Mories run started the move. It was kept going by Nick Cox, Colin Shaw and Ian Noble before Gavin Strang touched down. Five minutes later it was Strang touching down again. His own drive started the movement, scrum half Paddy Bowyer chipped to the corner where again the Muir throw was pinched and patient recycling ended with Strang getting over to allow Hawks to turn 17-3 ahead.

In early second half play first Fergus Pringle then Graham Harkness entered the sin bin. After the second incident Muir pulled back a try by Angus Martyn converted by O'Donnell. However, Hawks scored the bonus point try through scrum-half sub Euan Morrison converted by Rainey and made sure with a last second touchdown from Jono Wright.
