IN THE Scottish Hydro Electric-sponsored minor knock-out competitions there were no surprises at the semi-final stages.
However, Premiership Two Jed-Forest, the visitors to Premiership One Glasgow Hawks, came much closer than the final score of 30-20 suggests with Hawks on the wrong end of a 20-18 scoreline with only five minutes remaining.
There was a lot of sympathy for Jed coach Calum Brown. "On the whole I'm very proud of our guys ... but it was there for the taking," he admitted.
Jed made good use of the first-half wind to lead 15-11 at the turn thanks to three penalties from Chris Laidlaw followed by two from Euan Brown after Laidlaw sustained an injury. Nick Campbell had scored Hawks' first-half try and when Peter Jericevich registered a second, Hawks were 18-15 ahead. However, a sparkling run by winger Jamie McCraw put Jed back in a lead they looked like retaining.
With five minutes remaining, thought, Hawks were gifted a five-metre scrum from which winger Jono Wright touched down and four minutes into stoppage time he added his second which Gossman converted.
