SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY REPORTS
Glasgow Hawks 46 - 0 Stewart's Melville: Joy of six as Hawks tear into easy prey
Published Date: 06 September 2009
By Alan Christie at Anniesland
STEWART'S MELVILLE unleashed an open, off-loading style of play from the kick-off but it was Hawks who dominated the day.
As early as the third minute Hawks took the lead following a surge of 40 metres from No.8 Grant Strang from where the ball was booted to the left where winger Ian Bowyer touched down.
Colleges found it difficult to resist home forward power with successive penalties given away finally yielding a penalty success for Duncan Weir in the 12th minute. Desperate defence produced a sin-binning for Ben Leathes and within minutes Strang was forcing his way over from short range with Weir converting for a 15-0 lead after 19 minutes.
Scoring in the second quarter was limited to a penalty by Weir until Hawks full-back Craig Gossman produced a try to enter a "score of the season" short list.
The youngster set off in his own 22, zipped through a few opponents, then kicked long from half-way and followed up to touch down in the corner. Weir converted for a 25-0 half time lead.
It was all Hawks from the re-start with Colleges holding out until the bonus point came in 55 minutes with a score from centre Ian Noble following a lineout drive after Stew/Mel flanker Ross Sutherland had been sin-binned.
In the closing stages Hawks advanced their try bag to six and it could have been more.
A delicate side foot of the ball by Noble led to it being touched down over the line by Robbie Hair and Rory McKay celebrated his return to Anniesland with a try, finishing off Sean Murray's piercing run, all three scores converted by Weir.
Colleges' sour day was completed by lock Scott Brewster being shown a red card by referee Ted Coutts after he seemed to stamp.
