"It was a dream to come down here and produce a result as comprehensive as that," he said, as his league and cup double winners, after an unconvincing start to their campaign, reasserted their Premiership credentials in a pulsating match against hitherto unbeaten Ayr. Hawks drew first blood with a Michael Adamson penalty before a brief mid-half flurry from Ayr was snuffed out on the stroke of half-time when centre Ricky Munday burst through for a try converted by Adamson. Worse was to follow for Ayr at the start of the second period when Hawks twice broke away to score. First, full-back Colin Shaw sprinted two-thirds of the pitch before slipping inside for Wes Henry, then scrum-half Kenny Sinclair crossed before further tries from Ally Maclay and Ross Gillies settled matters, although Ayr did manage to salvage some pride with two late tries from pacy winger Steve Manning and Steve Heaton. Ayr coach Craig Redpath was magnanimous afterwards: "Full credit to Hawks. We made too many mistakes but we’ll come back again next week." For today, though, the derby bragging rights were heading back up the A77 to Glasgow.
