Hawks tested before earning routine victory
CAL DAVID AT OLD ANNIESLAND
HAWKS registered an ultimately routine win in a highly entertaining match from which the visitors drew much credit, and a consolation point from a four-try bag.
Hawks had by far the better of the first half territorially but that wasn’t surprising as they had the stiff breeze behind them. It was to Currie’s credit that they scored two tries to keep the match alive at the break with Hawks leading 22-12.
Indeed it was the visitors who touched down first - in the 11th minute after Mike Adamson had nosed Hawks ahead with a penalty. After Hawks Colin Shaw had kicked out on the full, Mike Ker made a clean break off a scrum and exchanged passes with Ben Cairns before scoring and then converting.
If Hawks had lacked a cutting edge they responded with two excellent tries in five minutes.
First, No. 8 Mark Sitch was put in by Steve Swindall, while the next was a classic interception by Ricky Munday from just inside the Currie half.
Hawks seemed to be cruising when an attempted push over from a scrum was botched but possession went to the left wing from where Stuart Low scored.
Currie secured a bonus point with a Tim Meadows try.
