HAWKS FLYING HIGH AS THEY DO THE DOUBLE
01/05/04
Glasgow Hawks 29 Dundee HSFP 17
Glasgow Hawks had to wait until the second minute of injury time before finally they doused Dundee's stirring challenge and thus added the BT Cup to their BT Premiership title.
Hawks’ Michael Rainey opened the scoring in the eleventh minute with his first successful kick of the afternoon (having missed an earlier attempt) 3 – 0 (11 mins).
A lovely jinking break by Hawks prop Gavin Mories was foiled by Dundee scrum half Shannon Wilson which immediately forced a change of direction. A clean Dundee clearance saw them hoof their way up to within ten meters of the Hawks try line. The line out take from Neil McComb and the resulting forwards drive saw hooker Dougie McLaren cross the line for the first try of the game (converted by Callum Rankin) 3 – 7 (14 mins).
Hawks reverted to camping out in Dundee’s 22 and even after several Dundee clearances, the consistent pressure paid off with Mark Sitch coming in at a blistering pace onto Stuart Low’s pop-up pass to cross the line with ease. 8 – 7 (21 mins).
It was a quick turnaround though as a speculative Dundee kick by stand off Mike Kerr saw a horrible stot for the Hawks defence –not so ghastly though for Kerr who flew between the Hawks defenders as his kick bounced perfectly into his hands allowing him to gallop unchallenged over the line (converted by Callum Rankin) 8 – 14 (24 mins).
With the momentum behind them, Dundee bombarded the Hawks line with a series of pick and drives (after opting for the kick to the corner rather than kicking for points) but were deemed to be held up over the line by referee David Changleng and then knocked on, losing their hard fought possession.
HALF TIME: GLASGOW HAWKS 8 DUNDEE HSFP 14
Hawks started the second half at a pace, Wes - Henry looking to have crossed the line in the right hand corner but for Ross Lemon’s try saving tackle. It didn’t take long though for Hawks' full back to make amends, this time on the other side of the pitch. With a four to two overlap, it was only a matter of which Hawk would cross the line – Low claiming the points (Rainey conversion)15 – 14 (43 mins).
GLASGOW HAWKS REPLACEMENTS:
19 Steve Swindall for 4 Scott Hutton (50 mins)
17 Steve Begley for 7 Neil McKenzie (50 mins)
DUNDEE REPLACEMENT:
18 Chris Cumming for 6 Alan Brown (50 mins)
Impressive and consistent defence from Dundee kept Hawks at bay for a solid ten minutes and they fought their way back into Hawks’ half and gained a further three points from a Callum Rankin penalty. 15 – 17 (52 mins).
GLASGOW HAWKS REPLACEMENTS:
16 Gordon McFadyen for 3 Gavin Mories (55 mins)
22 Ricky Munday for 13 Ally Maclay (55 mins)
DUNDEE REPLACEMENTS:
19 Tim Parratt for 7 George Oommen (56 mins)
20 Danny Slavin for Shannon Wilson (58 mins)
DUNDEE BLOOD REPLACEMENT:
21 Niall Gallagher for 10 Michael Kerr (60 mins)
A crucial kick 60 mins into the game could have pulled Hawks ahead again but Rainey missed the penalty. Only two minutes later though, the Dundee defence was finally breached when their talisman stand off Michael Kerr was forced into the blood bin. Glasgow scrum half Iain Monaghan was credited with the try in the far right corner, Rainey converting. 22 – 17 (62 mins).
DUNDEE BLOOD REPLACEMENT
10 Michael Kerr returns to the field (wearing No.9 shirt) (69 mins)
With moments of harem-scarem action from both sides, Dundee took the initiative and bravely kicked for the corner when awarded a penalty. It very nearly paid off for them, a man over in the corner and Ross Lemon had a straight foot race down the left wing only to be brought down agonisingly close to the line first by Low and then by Colin Shaw. A further Dundee attack was repulsed again and Hawks cleared to touch.
DUNDEE HSFP REPLACEMENTS:
22 Andy Kennedy 14 Dougie Gray (78 mins)
16 Neil Dymock for 1 JJ Van Der Esch (78 mins)
17 Ryan Milne for 4 Kevin Rosbottom (79 mins)
The action on the pitch in the dying minutes of the game was painfully close, kick for kick, pass for pass, whenever one side gained territory, the other clawed it back but Hawks made the final blow with a try for Colin Shaw (converted by Rainey) 29 – 17 (81 mins) and thus sealed their undefeated season as both BT Premiership Division 1 and BT Cup title holders.
GLASGOW HAWKS REPLACEMENTS:
21 Steve Gordon for 14 Colin Shaw (82 mins)
20 Michael Adamson for 11 Steven Duffy (82 mins)
FINAL SCORE: GLASGOW HAWKS 29 DUNDEE HSFP 17
Glasgow Hawks coach, Peter Wright, said: “We knew we were going to be in a battle as they had a pack who could compete with anybody. To leave it until two minutes into injury time, well, I wasn’t very happy about that but I take my hat off to both teams."
Dundee HSFP coach, Ian Rankin, said: “I get the feeling that the guys couldn’t have given any more. They didn’t let down Dundee or 2nd division rugby. Hawks showed why they are the best team in the country.”
