Hawks repel late Muir charge

EUAN MATHIESON AT MEGGETLAND

BOROUGHMUIR 21

GLASGOW HAWKS 32

GLASGOW Hawks moved a step closer to retaining the BT Premiership title with a performance that at times was brimming with stylish rugby. But they had to overcome a second-half fight back by the hosts to secure the win.

"It’s good to have something to work on at training on Tuesday", said Hawks coach Peter Wright. "And our performance in the second half shows we still have work to do."

Boroughmuir went into the match knowing that another defeat would effectively rule them out of the title race, and they certainly started the game as if they intended to prolong their championship prospects.

Early pressure created a fourth-minute scoring opportunity in the form of a 30-metre penalty in front of the posts, but Scott Hadden made a hash of his attempt on goal. Worse was to follow when the hosts gathered the restart and attempted to run the ball from deep. James Reilly threw a speculative pass and Ricky Munday extended a tentacle-like hand to intercept and race over for a try converted by Mike Adamson.

That score was the catalyst for a spell of Hawks pressure and, had Wes Henry been able to hold a pass from Colin Shaw, the lead would have doubled. The next points were only delayed, however, and with 22 minutes on the clock a high tackle by Reilly on Munday led to a successful penalty for Adamson and a warning for the Boroughmuir full-back.

Hawks continued to press and produced some delightful flowing rugby. However, the scoreboard remained unchanged, due largely to the visitors repeatedly taking the wrong option. That weakness was exposed when Stuart Low sidestepped his way past three defenders before off-loading to Shaw, who kicked rather than use the man outside.

While the Hawks supporters were berating the full-back for that blunder, the visitors’ pack rectified matters at the ensuing lineout. A steal against the throw and a powerful drive took play over the Boroughmuir line where Fergus Thomson applied the final touch. Adamson steered the touchline conversion between the sticks and suddenly the gap was 17 points.

And so it remained at the interval after Shaw had crossed the line, only for the score to be chalked off for a forward pass and the hosts had escaped unpunished when Hadden had an attempted clearance charged down, only for the ball to float into Reilly’s hands.

Things got worse for the hosts two minutes after the restart when a knock on in their favour became a penalty to Hawks for some back chat and Adamson gratefully accepted the invitation to add three more points.

Boroughmuir finally showed that they were also capable of producing good rugby when, for the first time since the opening minutes, they pieced together a move that carried play to within striking distance where a deft flip by Calum Cusiter sent Ben Fisher thundering over. Hadden added the conversion.

Hawks retaliated almost immediately with a move of high quality that featured forward power, slick ball transfer and a clinical finish by Henry. Again Boroughmuir came back. Hadden thumped a penalty into the corner, and from the ensuing lineout the ball was worked out to Euan Mathieson who barged over and left Hadden a straightforward conversion.

Suddenly it was Hawks who were on the back foot. When Hadden capped a spell of pressure by battling over for a try, which he also converted, the deficit was trimmed to just four points with 11 minutes left and Boroughmuir set about winning a game that by rights should have been out of their reach.

However, deep into injury time, Hawks earned a scrum inside the home half from which the ball was worked out to Shaw, who raced in for a bonus-point try that also left the hosts empty handed.
