Pretenders fail in tough test

GLASGOW Hawks finished off the challenge to their title from Biggar in emphatic fashion as they took five points from the League’s surprise side.
The match was effectively over as a contest after 25 minutes and Hawks had their try bonus secured by half-time. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, however, and an upset seemed possible when Quintan Sanft put Biggar ahead with a dropped goal. That was pretty much the extent of the Biggar challenge who, with the exception of Eddie Manawaiti, were bettered by Hawks in every area.

Hawks began the demolition in six minutes following a clean Guy Perret catch from a line-out which had Steve Swindall score a try from the subsequent drive.

Hawks were only ever in their own half when play was restarted, pulling further ahead after Stewart Smith broke, passing to Stuart Low who went in under the posts. As Mike Adamson converted the traffic was all one way.

In 25 minutes Mark Sitch caught a Sanft throw, pass would give it too much dignity, and ran easily from the halfway for the score, with thevisitors’ backs spectating.

Biggar eventually entered Hawks territory to score a Sanft penalty but this only postponed the fourth try. Eric Milligan going over following a trademark catch and drive, before another Sanft penalty for the visitors.

The parade of tries continued after the break, Peter Dalton going over first under the posts when supporting Smith.

In 58 minutes Hawks took their sixth as Sitch and Ritchie McKnight combined on the blind side of a scrum to go over from the visitors’ 22.

Sitch then secured his award for man of the match when he took his second try when running in support of Wes Henry.

Biggar somehow secured a try, largely through the labours of Manawaiti, but really this was all Hawk’s show.

Kenny Sinclair took them over the 50-point mark, breaking from the halfway line, the scrum-half showed tremendous pace as he left Biggar’s backline in his wake. With the Scottish cup only starting for Hawks next week they are well on the way to defending one piece of their silverware.
