THE SCOTSMAN REPORTS;
The Scots mature like vintage wine
IT MAY not have meant much on the day but the Scottish Legends beat their French counterparts handsomely on Friday night by a score in region of 78-29, everyone having pretty much given up counting by the final whistle. The French fielded a true veterans side, some of those guys could have seen action at the Somme, but they were boosted by the addition of Philippe Sella, Frank Mesnel and Denis Charvet who may have lost a yard of pace but still showcased all the old skills that brought them a mountain of caps.
In addition Glasgow Hawks thrashed an understrength Racing Club of Paris who badly underestimated the strength of Scottish club rugby. The Glasgow club was especially strong in a near faultless first half and the result will have done no harm to Hawks’ ambition to play European rugby next year. The evening was rounded off by their president, Brian Simmers, surprising everyone by giving a flowing speech in word-perfect Franglais
