HARRY McARTHUR at Old Anniesland November 20 2006
"WE started well and finished well but it was the bit in between that killed us." That was Jim Hay, the Hawick coach's succinct assessment of his team's downfall at Old Anniesland. And few could argue with that.
He went on: "I told the boys I was pleased with their performance. I couldn't deny them credit for their effort for they kept going right to the end.
"I thought Hawks played some real open rugby and we were happy to try to keep up with them. One or two strange refereeing decision didn't help but there is no use dwelling on that.
"What I have to do with the boys now is to get them to dig out a win somewhere soon because we are running out of games. Okay, we are staying just ahead of Aberdeen GSFP at second bottom in the league but will need to come up with a victory soon."
The Greens again denied any resemblance to a team with relegation worries. They showed a lot of character, have some bright youngsters doing well in the absence of injured experienced players, and perhaps just need a bit of luck.
Hawks are still blowing hot and cold. When they are good, they are very, very good but when they are bad . . .
Coach David Wilson obviously cannot be too hard on his players. They have now moved into the top half of the table. But it must be frustrating for him because he knows the team has great potential but too readily goes off the boil.
""We'll take the win. The first half was a bit flat but all credit to Hawick, they showed a lot of commitment, threw the ball around, showed skill and purpose, and were unfortunate not to score more. But it shows our lack of urgency and concentration after getting a few scores. We'll have to focus on that for the future."
And talking of games ahead, Hawks will be without their star fly-half Mike Adamson for the next two matches (Dundee HSFP and Boroughmuir) because of Scotland international Sevens calls. Scrum-half Kenny Sinclair also has commitments which will cause him to miss at least one of those fixtures.
Hawick showed their resolve by narrowing the gap late on, having trailed 27-3 with 10 minutes to go.
Both teams lost a player to yellow card dismissals. Hawick's Dan Landels was sent off after seven minutes and just after he returned, Nick Cox of Hawks was sent to the touchline. He was lucky to receive only a yellow card instead of a red for it seemed a punch was thrown. If Hawks had been forced to play an hour shorthanded instead of only 10 minutes, it might just have changed the complexion of the game. But as it is, their mercurial
season continues.
