Glasgow Hawks outpowered Dundee HSFP in a dour and jittery mid-table BT Premiership tussle at stormy Mayfield. Neither team looked capable of stringing together sequences of flowing rugby, but toppled champions Hawks just deserved their 19-10 win. Greg Francis bagged two tries, while Stevie Gordon claimed the other with Murray Strang converting twice. Neil McComb gathered the Taysiders' only touchdown, while Barry Jones kicked a conversion and penalty. Consider too, that Dundee normally have one of the slickest line-outs in the League, but that Hawks controlled most of their own ball whilst spoiling most of Dundee's and one could understand if there had been a large margin of victory. As it was Dundee spent the last five minutes deep in Hawks territory, desperately seeking the try which would have narrowed the margin. So, given Hawks superiority in key areas, why was it ultimately so close? Hawks coach David Wilson summed it up rather nicely, stating: "In the first half, into the elements, the ball retention and the control that we had was quite superb; very encouraging. I was disappointed we didn't maintain that type of pressure in the second half. Dundee did to us in the second half, what we did to them in the first half." Hawks built a 12-0 lead with tries from Steve Gordon and Greg Francis, with a Murray Strang conversion, but Dundee replied with a Barry Jones penalty and a Neil McComb try which Jones converted.
