GLAS HAWKS 26 GHA 7
THIS match had something that all games at the elite level lack – the cold breath of relegation, blowing here on both teams' neck.
It was Hawks who reacted to it with a convincing five point win that should see them safe.
Hawks had been advised of GHA's scrum power and from the start sought to keep play open.
Despite making a mess of their opening line out Hawks went ahead in just five minutes. Tapping a free kick on GHA 22, the forwards' thrusts to the line were then held, but the ball was swept left with Steve Gordon touching down.
In 16 minutes one of these Hawks handling episodes moved through a long series of phases in the sodden conditions but ended with Rory Kerr just over-kicking to the corner.
James Noon had resumed in the GHA colours and the injury wracked No.10 found winger Rory Watson with a cross kick, but Hawks Marc Davids wrapped him up.
In the 26th minute Hawks' second try arrived. It began with a thrust on half way by Ian Noble, Stuart Smith kept things going in style before finding Ally Maclay on his inside to run in from the GHA twenty two.
In the half's final minute GHA handling, with Noble sin-binned, gave Watson another chance but he was eased into touch.
Despite being a man down it was business as usual from the re-start. Hawks giant prop Nick Cox got over from two metres in the 51st minute with Kenny Sinclair converting.
This provoked GHA into life. Hawks hooker John Maclay ended in the bin and visitors' pressure produced a try for Jon Welsh converted by Noonan.
GHA made nothing of further pressure and in the final minute Ally Maclay powered over for Hawk' bonus point try.
No team list has been added yet.
