SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY REPORTS
Currie 25 - 26 Glasgow Hawks: Hawks fly away with victory
By Stuart Sutherland
at Malleny Park
PETER Wright's young Hawks came of age at Currie with a victory based on guts and determined defence. Having turned three points ahead, they surrendered the lead to a Johnny Smith try, but Stevie O'Donnell slotted a simple penalty for a one point margin, and they held on despite all Currie could throw at them.
Hawks spent the second half in Currie territory and although the home side dominated possession, they simply could not break the Hawks' defensive line.
A cracking first half produced five tries and 43 points but only a further eight points were added after the break.
O'Donnell crucially kicked his goals – both conversions and four penalties. Flankers Andy Jackson and Graham Harkness had the tries. Ross Weston, Douglas Fife and Johnny Smith (2) got the tries which gave Currie a bonus point, but Smith collected only one conversion and a penalty.
