NATIONAL MIDI FINALS DAY AT MURRAYFIELD
The 2005 National Midi Finals took place on Sunday afternoon on the international pitch at Murrayfield with age-grade finals for S1s, S2s, under-15s and under-16s.
The S1s kicked off the day’s events in a close fought battle between Stew Mel Lions and Glasgow Hawks. Stew Mel Lions looked as if they would be first on the scoreboard but were denied the three points after a try-saving tackle in the ninth minute. Hawks then came back six minutes later with a break down the wing only to be bundled in touch two metres from the line.
In the second half both teams played a wide game and the Lions capitalised first when second row Joe Ryan scooped up the ball following a covering tackle to run in the first try. Stand-off Jamie Lauder converted to take the score to 4-0.
The impressive centre pairing of Neil Bowie and Michael Crawley proved vital when they clinched the Lions second and third tries respectively to take the Edinburgh side ten points clear. They held on to their lead and took the S1 title.
