SCOTS TO MEET USA IN BOWL SEMI-FINAL

Scotland 7s will compete in the Bowl semi-final against the USA tomorrow in the Cathay Pacific HSBC Hong Kong 7s after youngster Sean Kennedy scored a defining try against France at the death.
The Scots started against Australia on day two but despite tries from Ross Miller and Colin Gregor were unable to prompt a much needed victory to reach their on-going goal of a Cup quarter-final. The match concluded 14-29.
Next up they had France. This time round their defence improved and their attack was patient, and after going 12-0 down they produced a spirited comeback, sparked by James Fleming’s second-half try. Drawing the ball out to the wing James showed his pace by tearing up the last defender and touching down under the posts.

It looked like France had sealed the victory though as the hooter went for the end of the game. However, the Scots had the ball and held their own for a number of phases, being patient with the passes and taking contact when necessary, and their patience paid off when Sean Kennedy made a step and the path opened up for him to run right through the middle of two defenders. Gregor converted and the Scots won 14-12.
Scotland 7s head coach, Graham Shiel, said: “Feelings are mixed today as with the results. Australia was a tough game and we gave away too much of a lead, we did do well when we had possession though and we scored.
“Our performance against France was better and we stuck to our task as a team. It was important in this game to be competitive and to take away a win.
“We had to work hard in the game and well done to the players for bringing us back into striking distance and retaining possession, enough to win.
“USA are very competitive, we have played them once this season so far and beat them last time.
“They have had a tough group to get to this stage, they have a new coach and there are some personnel that we haven’t encountered before.
“We must control possession and if we do we can come away with a win and a place in the Bowl final.”
Scotland 7s will play USA at 2.21pm (local time) and if they beat America they will progress to the Bowl final at 5.30pm (local time) and will be up against Kenya or France.
