Following a major review of its operations the Board of the Glasgow Hawks announced that they were fully committed to supporting the team in its efforts to regain Premier 1 status.
Club Chairman, Alasdair Graham said that, ‘for the sake of Glasgow and Scottish Rugby it is vitally important that the Glasgow area has a team playing at the top level of Scottish club rugby’ He also said that ‘they were delighted to confirm that Jamie Dempsey, backs coach of the Scottish Under 16 XV and understudy to Peter Wright at Hawks for the last four years will be the new head coach. The highly experienced Jimmy Sinclair will assist Jamie. Both Jamie and Jimmy hold the highest levels of coaching qualifications. Mike Blackie and Cammy Little both ex Hawks players will continue to coach the 2nd XV.’
Assurances have been received by the bulk of the players that they will remain with the Club. Virtually all the players live locally and the attraction of playing with Hawks is the opportunity to develop their playing careers without having to travel to train throughout the winter.
Hawks have an exceptionally strong Junior Section with around 120 young players at four age levels from 13 to 16 and next season plan to run an under 18 XV coached by John Couper. In the main the players from this side will be attending schools in the state sector.
Hawks also announced that they were committed to running the community programme that brings rugby to 15 primary and 3 secondary schools in the West End of Glasgow.
Graham also said that ‘it would take a great effort from players and supporters alike to ensure that the Club returns to the glory years when the Club won three successive league titles and appeared in 5 Scottish cup finals’.
Hawks are now looking forward to appearing in the Melrose 7’s on 14th April and participating in four rounds of the Legacy 7’s later in the season.
