This year the Melrose Vets Sevens will again be graced by a team loosely pulled together from The Second City of Empire
A team insider took time out from training to brief the news desk
"We are appearing as Glasgow Myths this year! (replaces Hawks Legends)
It is alleged that this will be the final round-up for some of us on the wrong side of 50! (Given it is for over 35s and Cammy Murray was star man last season this is understandable). Specially commissioned jerseys have been struck for the occasion - we will try and get an exclusive photo to you early Friday. Our design team of Stella McCartney, Vivien Westwood and the last Alexander McQueen have been working hard to bring something a bit special. As a tantaliser I can reveal that the strip is Black n Blue - a prediction of what is to come?
We re stricken by late call offs - this can happen to highly tuned athletes on occasion but the reasons change. They move from playing and training injuries to:
"Wife's needing a hand with the shopping", or
"Sick wean", or
"My hip replacement won't be done in time"
Squad appears as:
Kenny Hamilton
Cammy Little
Charlie Dunlop
Ally Ritchie
Ken O'Callaghan The Pizza Man
Liam MacIntyre
Dave Michie
Under debate: Mike Blackie
Barrie Gray
Mike Gribben
Gerry (Hitman) Hawkes
Drew Waddell (Water boy)
Chris Hamilton (Nipper)
Add the Edinburgh Group
G Doc (non-playing kit man)
Sandy Nairn (first outing in 22 years!)
Donald Wilson (and his Gucci hair)
Stewart Bennet (Yes - Benzo)
Rifle Droppers: (late call offs)
Graham MacNab
George Breckenridge
Sandy Kennedy
First tie for us is at 11.40am V Hong Kong Vets! It is our hope that they are here for the beer but more likely it will be similar to 3 years ago when we played against the Ulster team that won the Heineken about 7 years before!
Our 2nd tie is against Millbrae (Ayr) at 2.20 pmish
Most of the squad are staying down to offer the Hawks a bit of support on Saturday.
