London 7s debut for Hughes

Miller starts v Portugal

SCOTS PUT PORTUGAL TO SWORD IN POOL
Saturday, 12 May 2012
Scotland registered their first victory of the London Marriott 7s this afternoon with a confident 26-12 win over Portugal, to progress to tomorrow's Bowl competition at Twickenham.
After being 7-12 down at half time, the Scots fought back to score all the points in the second half with tries from McGuigan, Fleming, Fedo and captain Gregor (photo).

Core side for next season Portugal put up a battle in the first half though a flurry of spilled balls and missed tackles meant it was nearly three minutes before a score, Foro taking the five points. A missed pass to Fedo saw the ball intercepted minutes later with Vieira Almeida crossing the line and taking the conversion to put the Portuguese ahead 12-0 as half time approached.

In a moove that began just before the hooter the Scots found their feet and launched Colin Gregor towards the line, he lunged across and went on to take the conversion, making it 12-7 at half time.

HT: 12-7

Scotland came out with guns blazing in the second half and, almost immediately it was Michael Fedo who was racing towards the line, ball in hand. The try was converted again by Gregor to make it 14-12 to Scotland.

Next it was James Fleming who made the break across the pitch and up the wing, flying across the whitewash for the score, again converted by Gregor to make it 21-12.

In a well-worked move from Miller to Fedo to Fleming to McGuigan, it was the latter who crossed the line for Scotland's last try to make the final score 26-12.

Hawks Rory Hughes made his Scotland debut v South Africa
Scotland however lost 5-20

Scottish Rugby - HOUSTON ROCKETS INTO SPACE BUT SCOTS DEFEATED

An improved performance in the first half showed what Scotland can do but South Africa ultimately increased the gas in this second pool D game for both sides, to make the final score 20-5, and two defeats from two games for the Scots.

A well-worked first half try from John Houston (photo) brought the crowd to its feet but here were few further flashes of flair to cause the same reaction as the game progressed.

The second half did spell a Scotland 7s debut for Rory Hughes who enjoyed his first five minutes of international action.

It's was a visibly more pumped up side that took to the pitch for this second pool game with the game evenly balanced for the first two minutes with a promising reak from Fleming until turnover ball gave du Preez the chance to seize the gap and cross for South Africa. His conversion attempt pulled wide and also caused him to pull a muscle, causing his departure from the game (5-0).

A minute later and a stunningly simple break from John Houston had his tacklers try to take him down just short of the line; dogged determination saw him hang on and lunge across the whitewash to even the scores (5-5).

It was all square for the bulk of the remainder of the half until, just as the hooter cranked up, Kyle Brown dotted down for South Africa, the conversion attempt wide.

HT: 10-5

It was all South Africa at the begnning of the second half, however, as Ulengo bolted for the line twice in the next three minutes, Houston making a valiant attempt to prevent the second try (20-5).

It was a Scotland 7s' debut for Rory Hughes, however, two minutes into the half and he worked well to make his presence felt.

The Scots picked up the pace as the minutes ticked down. A solid run down the wing from Michael Fedo showed promise but with no-one in support it was another missed opportunity and the game ended 20-5.
