Builders wind up season on a high

South Side Advertiser reports

GHA went into their home tournament as favourites, but it was invitational select the Minerva Builders who came out on top at the Braidholm sevens.

In beautiful conditions in the southside on Saturday, teams from across Scotland came to compete in the third annual tournament.

GHA, who defeated all comers at last week’s Glasgow city sevens, were looking to make it two wins on the trot, but were overwhelmed by the Builders in the final.

After a difficult season for Glasgow Hawks in which they were relegated from Premier one, a number of their stars turned on the style as part of the Minerva select.

One of which was scrum-half Peter Jericevich, a former GHA star, who faced off against his two brothers, Tane and Rangi in the final.

It was the youngest sibling who came out on top, with Peter, fellow Hawks star Craig Gossman and Ayr centre Ross Curle the stand out performers for the Builders in a 38-22 win.

The Builders overcame a plucky Ardrossan side in the semi-final and stepped their performance up a gear for the challenge of a GHA team featuring former Glasgow Warriors stars Hefin O’Hare and Andy Henderson.

Minerva winger Craig Gossman — the tournament’s leading try scorer — told ExtraSport: “It was a great final played in great conditions. Everybody in our team played their part to get us there and the win really capped off a great tournament all round”.

Their coach, Iain Noble, a former Zimbabwe international, added: “It was a real victory for team spirit”.

Rangi Jericevich, who was the tournament organiser, told ExtraSport: “This year’s event was a tremendous success with teams traveling from all over Scotland to compete.

“We were also fortunate to have fantastic weather which brought out a crowd of almost 600 and there was a festival-like atmosphere throughout the day.

“This was our third annual staging of the event and we are delighted to see how it has grown, and plans are already afoot to make next year even better.

“Congratulations to the Minerva Builders, a Glasgow Hawks-based invitational side who defeated the home team, GHA, in the final.

“Also, congratulations to Hillhead/Jordanhill who defeated East Kilbride to win the plate competition.

“Finally, I must say well done my brother Peter who captained the victorious Minerva team and was also awarded the Specsavers Newlands player of the tournament”.
