There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night --
Ten to make and the match to win --
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat,
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his Captain's hand on his shoulder smote --
'Play up! play up! and play the game!'
Many think the modern Olympics was born from the tradition of ancient Greece-- whilst the trappings surely were the essence came from the values of the playing fields of Britain both rural and publc school so admired by Baron de Courbetin
These very same values will be played out not so much on The Close at Rugby School but the playing fields of Old Anniesland this Saturday when Hawks face GHK in a contest of willow and leather
The All Hawks X1 line up to face the might of GHK on Saturday at 3.00 pm includes some exciting players to watch such as Wicket Keeper Paul Henderson and all rounder Grant Strang alongside the old heads Cammy Little and Chris Hamilton.
Modesty has prevented Ian Noble mentioning his considerable cricketing pedigree but the Diary will redress that shortly
Many younger readers will not realise that not long ago Cammy Little's pre season training actually was Cricket
