Great All Rounders Chalmers, Carrick and Noble

This weekend sees Hawks take on GHK on the green sward of Old ANNIESLAND at Cricket
Cricket has been long established in the fabric of the clubs that make up ANNIESLAND OLD and NEW in fact it was first on the ground before rugby when Accies were formed in 1866
Apart from players it has produced a range of presidents for the Scottish Cricket Union including Andy Little and Bill Mann

Over generations ANNIESLAND has produced many fine rugby players and also several great cricketers including Ian Peebles who played Test Cricket for England
Peebles once took 13 wickets for Oxford in the Varsity match against Cambridge but one of one of his finest moments came when he dismissed the legendary Don Bradman of Australia in a test match at Old Trafford
Bradman then observed "When I got to the crease I found Peebles bowling extraordinarily well, and ... I may as well admit that for the first time in my life I was unable to detect a bowler's leg break from his "bosey" (googly). I watched Peebles as closely as I knew how, but there was no use. Neither by watching his hand nor the ball could I detect it, and definitely this day his bowling was too good for me. I had a most unhappy time"

In the context of Saturday they have also produced some of a rare breed those few who have been capped at both sports rugby and cricket

Men like Tom Chalmers
One of the earliest Scottish players, he is sometimes considered the first great Scottish rugby fullback. He played in the first six international test matches, all of them against England, between 1871 and 1876,including Scotland's very first match. He was a solid tackler, good kicker and handy dribbler (a tactic of the time). He played club rugby for the Glasgow Academicals, which was the strongest club in Scotland at the time.
In October 1872, Chalmers took part in a trial match for the Scotland team for the first association football international match against England and was named in the list of 17 possible players. Chalmers was praised as "a capital goalkeeper, albeit the rules were new to him." In the event, the entire Scottish team was made up of members of the Queen's Park club
He also represented Scotland at cricket. He was an excellent batsman and a good medium paced bowler. On one occasion playing for West of Scotland against Australia in 1878 he scored 38 against the bowling of Fred Spofforth, Garrett and others.

Men like James S Carrick
Carrick played rugby with the Glasgow Academicals and was in the Scotland team from 1876-7.
He was also a notable cricketer who took the record for the world's highest score at the age of 29, Carrick scored 419 not out for the touring West of Scotland team against Priory Park in Chichester in July 1885. A left-handed batsman, he batted for 11 and a half hours and the second day's play was extended by a few minutes to allow him to beat William Roe's 415.
Carrick opened the innings and batted for the entire two day match, making his score out of 745/4. He scored one eight (a huge hit to square leg), two sixes, two fives and 30 fours. The Priory Park bowling was headed by James Lillywhite, a bowler with over 1,200 first-class wickets, including eight in his two Tests, but who was caned for 170 here. Carrick's innings featured strong off-driving and hefty blows to leg and was blemished by only two chances, to deep-mid-on and the keeper. Priory Park put the chance to become part of history above any resentment over the lack of a declaration and, the record achieved, Carrick was "carried to the dressing room amid immense cheering".
He went on to be Secretary of that venerable West End institute the Western Baths and a founder of the International Rugby Board IRB in 1886

Men like Ian Noble
Ian has represented Zimbabwe at both codes of rugby Union and League and also Zimbabwe and South Eastern Transvaal at cricket
