The Scottish Spina Bifida Association 100 Holes of Golf Challenge

A team from Glasgow Hawks will be competing this Friday in the Arran 100 Holes of Golf Challenge to help raise £40,000 for the Scottish Spina Bifida Association.

The SSBA is the only registered charity with a Scotland-wide remit to support children young people and adults affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and allied conditions.

Right now there are over 3,000 children, young people and adults in Scotland affected by these disabilities and without the SSBA’s Family Support Services, Support Centre and Lo-Call Helpline many people would not have access to the support they need. Every year the SSBA’s Family Support Workers handle over 2500 enquiries and make over 250 home and hospital visits.

It costs almost £1 million every year to maintain this high level of services and the charity relies almost entirely on fundraising challenges, events, donations and the goodwill of volunteers to raise these much needed funds.

The event itself sees 8 teams of 3 golfers play 18 holes at Lamlash, 18 at Whiting Bay, 18 at Lochranza, 16 at Brodick, 12 at Shiskine, nine at Corrie, and nine at Machrie meaning a grand total of 100 holes on the Isle of Arran. We start at 4am and should finish around 8pm. The Challenge has been organised by the Director of the SSBA, Sam Forrest. Sam is a friend of former Hawks Director of Rugby John Roxburgh and it was through John that the club became involved in this great cause.

The Hawks team comprises current coach and occasional emergency player Cammy Little; Fergus Wallace, former Scotland A and Glasgow captain and Man of the Match at Hawks' first Scottish Cup win in 1998; and Colin Shaw, scorer of 5 tries in Hawks' famous 80-19 win over Hawick at Mansfield Park to retain the Scottish Championship in 2004 before moving on to the Warriors, Scotland 7s and Scotland A.

Hawks are proud to be associated with SSBA and Friday's fund raising efforts and would be extremely grateful for any support that players, members or friends can give to the charity through our "Just Giving" web page link or the "text giving" number below. Thanks in advance for any donations.

Updates will appear on the Hawks website on Friday so be sure to check in on what should be a relatively gentle workout for Shawsy and a borderline impossible test of endurance for Ferg and Cammy!
