Two Hawks Moscow bound

Scotland 7s head coach, Graham Shiel, has today named two changes to his squad to play in the second leg of the FIRA-AER GP European Sevens Series this weekend (Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July) in Moscow.
Some 12 club players will compete in the competition against Portugal, Spain, France, Germany and Italy, with Glasgow Hawks’ Ross Miller and Ayr’s Craig Gossman replacing Struan Dewar and Mark Cairns who were involved in the first FIRA-AER tournament in Lyon.

Ross Miller was involved in seven HSBC Sevens World Series tournaments in season 2011/12 and scored ten tries

Shiel said: “A large number of the players who played in Lyon performed well. This is another chance for them to play at a high level against some well established 7s teams.
“Struan is part of our full-time programme so will be involved next year and Mark is unavailable to play this weekend, so we have an opportunity to bring in two more club players in Ross and Craig.
“Ross is a very physical player and brings experience of the HSBC Sevens World Series. This tournament is a great chance for him to showcase his leadership qualities.
“Craig has trained well and his performance on the domestic circuit recently has been good. I want to have a closer look at his potential for longer term involvement with our sevens programme.”
Russia is three hours ahead of the UK therefore Scotland 7s will take on Germany at 7.22am (BST), Italy at 10.28am (BST), Spain at 1.34pm (BST) and Portugal at 3.56pm (BST) on Saturday (30 June). They will complete the group stage at 8.06am (BST) against France on Sunday (1 July) before moving into a Cup, Plate or Bowl semi-final.
The Scots are currently sixth in the European rankings and their efforts this weekend will determine their position in the final FIRA-AER GP tournament in Odense, Denmark on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July.
Shiel continued: “Seven games in one weekend is a challenge and we have a tough group this week.
“We will have to play our best in every game to make sure we are set-up well for the final tournament in Denmark.”
