Hawks 27 Grammar 24

Good Hawks Win Against Premier Opponents

The new look Hawks team put in an excellent performance to beat Aberdeen Grammar from the league above. Inspired by the older heads in the team notably, Mike Adamson, Grant  Strang and Ross Miller the younger players responded to the challenge to score 5 tries in a keenly contested game that was more like a cup tie than a friendly. On a beautiful day, ideal for running rugby, a good crowd were entertained to an exciting and at times highly skilful game. If all matches are played like this the spectators are in for a good season.
Hawks were not overawed by the size of there opponents, who had given Glasgow Warriors a good run for their money last Saturday. In fact there are no shrinking violets in this young Hawks side as everyone is playing for their position and there are some good players on the fringe of selection.
Hawks started cautiously and were prone to giving away penalties that lost them serious amounts of territory. As a result of one of these Grammar caught them out of position down the blindside and scored in the corner.
From that moment Hawks turned up the pressure and by halftime had scored scored three tries to lead by 15-5
The second half started scrappily for Hawks especially when Hadden McPherson was yellow carded wrongly for a high tackle. He didn't commit the offence it was another Hawks player who was guilty. This cost Hawks a penalty try to narrow the score to 15-12. Hawks then had a stroke of luck when Mike Adamson intercepted inside his own 22 and ran the full length of the field to score. Andy White converted for 22-12.
Sensing that defeat was a strong possibility Grammar stepped up the pressure against their depleted opponents and scored two more tries and a conversion to lead by 22-24 going into the final 10 minutes.
Showing commendable spirit and fitness Hawks controlled the closing exchanges and were justly awarded by scoring the final try just before the end to close the game out with a 27-24 victory.
Hawks have won all four of their pre season friendlies and this should give them confidence to look forward to the league season starting on Saturday when Watsonians are the visitors to Old Anniesland. Kick off 3pm
The players and coaches have worked tirelessly throughout the summer what is now needed is a big support to cheer them on.
Season tickets are still available and can be purchased at the gate on Saturday for £70 or £50 for concessions
