Keith Davies scored two tries as Hawick got their first win of the season in the RBS National League on Saturday.


Before the weekend the Greens had drawn against Stewart’s Melville and lost to Selkirk, but it all came good at Mansfield Park against previously unbeaten Hillhead-Jordanhill.

Having already won away to Jed-Forest and Stewart’s Melville, the Glasgow men travelled to the Borders in fine fettle, but it was the hosts who took the game by the scruff of the neck. Davies led the way with his ten points, while Lee Armstrong, Kieran Willison and Neil Armstrong also grabbed tries to make sure that the home side got a bonus point. Armstrong also kicked four conversions.

In the 31-14 loss, the points for Hillhead/Jordanhill came from a try by Dave Fisken and three penalties from Andrew Leslie. That result meant that Glasgow Hawks went to the top of the table after they recorded their third win on the spin.

Tom Steven was the star of the show for Glasgow Hawks at Old Anniesland against Kelso, running in three tries, with Grant Strang scoring two and Haddon McPherson also crossing. In the 38-9 victory, Mike Adamson, last week named the club’s development officer, kicked four conversions with Kelso’s points coming from Murray Hastie.

Selkirk edged out Hamilton 23-20 at Philiphaugh to go into second place. Darren Clapperton led the way with two tries for the Borderers, with Ryan Crockatt also going over for a score and Mark McVie kicking eight points through two penalties and a conversion.

Scott Whitelaw and Ross Inglis grabbed tries for the visitors, with Owen McLeish kicking ten points as Hamilton picked up a losing bonus point to leave them eighth in the table which is still taking shape. Watsonians built on last week’s comfortable win over Jed-Forest with a much tighter victory over Edinburgh rivals Stewart’s Melville at Inverleith. Recent matches between these two sides have all been close and it was the same this weekend, the visitors coming through 16-12 thanks to a late try by Ben Di Rollo.

Their other points came from a Scott McKean try and penalties by Di Rollo and Brian Walls, while Stewart’s Melville captain and ex-‘Sonian Seb Trotter kicked four penalties.

Jed-Forest got their first victory when they saw off Biggar 20-13 at Riverside Park to leave the latter bottom of the table.
