New post on Glasgow Accies Rugby Club
1st XV v Helensburgh
by MarkWalker
In a performance that ranged from faltering to quite sparkling at times, yesterday's match at NA in the autumnal sunshine was not vintage stuff by any means, but it was largely entertaining.
Yes, we probably did enough to justify the 27 - 20 win, but the failure to grab a bonus point and then to allow Helensburgh to creep in for one themselves at the death will irk Coaches Wilson & Craig more than just a little.
That being said, with three tries from the backs, all coming from slick passing moves there was some good stuff and more than enough to silence the vociferous travelling support. The first came from a textbook break from the base of the scrum by Kenny B on the halfway line, and his subsequent run and superbly timed pass (take note please backs!) set up the first real scoring opportunity for Bobby to sprint 30m for the line. The second saw Jamie D roll back the years to prove that though his body may be in bits, he still knows where the line is and the third, arguably our best, gave Jonny his first score of the season: a great scrum (let's be honest guys, there weren't many were there?) mid-way into Burgh's half gave Ben the chance to whip the ball away quickly to Ali. He cleverly drew his man and off-loaded to Bobby who, with a little swerve of his hips, saw the Helensburgh midfield part obligingly for him. Scampering through the gap, he also drew a defender and then laid a simple and well-weighted pass to the full back who crashed over.
Other notable performances came from MOTM Elliot McLaren who performed particularly well in the loose, Ben at scrum-half who harried tirelessly and generally made a nuisance of himself as all good 9's do, and Beaver who actually came through this one without requiring hospital treatment! Special mention too to Ali who kicked every conversion and two penalties as well - wonder what was in his porridge yesterday? Well done guys!
So there you have it folks - short and sweet. Some good, some average, and some stuff you never want to see again in your lives. If we can play for a full 80 minutes next week, like we did in spells yesterday (and as we did last week for that matter!), we'll be more than a match for anybody.
(Editor's note: sadly Kevin Ferrie couldn't be at NA yesterday so we're a bit light in the Match Reports Dept. these days. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a scribe and would like to help out with this (largely enjoyable, though completely thankless) task, don't be shy and just let anyone on the Committee know - all offers of assistance would be gratefully received.)
