The spirit of Liddell lives on
With Andy Robinson unable to persuade Euan Murray to change his stance on Sunday rugby for the All Blacks match it would appear that the spirit of one of Scotland's greatest Olympians lives on even in these more secular times
Here the stance made by a man whose rugby career took off on the pitch at New ANNIESLAND in the Inter City of 1922 and whose athletics career finished on the track at Ibrox some three years later lives on
The man charged with marking Liddell in that match at Anniesland was Max Simmers of Glasgow Accies quite a challenge to keep pace with a player in line for the Olympic Gold and world record double--don't suppose a Warriors winger would fancy marking Usain Bolt even on a heavy pitch at Scotstoun
Liddell did eventually concede to Sunday sport in the Weifang internment camp where he sadly died at a young age as it was the only day that the young detainees were allowed proper exercise
The influence of this Scots rugby playing athlete who became known as China's first Olympic gold medalist lives on today as Andy Robinson has found out
