RBS Premiership: Watsonians comeback stuns Hawks
Published: 29 October 2012
WATSONIANS pulled ahead in the race for promotion to the RBS Premiership on Saturday with a stunning 34-31 victory over Glasgow Hawks at Myreside.
Hawks looked destined to claim the double over their Edinburgh rivals and go top of the league after roaring into a 31-3 lead just after half-time, but ‘Sonians bounced back, with the help of an interception score and pacy outside centre Scott McKean streaked through for the match-winning try with just a minute remaining.
With only the champions from the new RBS National League assured of a place in the Premiership next season, the battle for top spot is unlikely to be decided yet, but Hawks, who won the Anniesland encounter also by three points at the start of the season, now need the help of others to rein in a Watsonians outfit now holding a five-point lead at the top.
Hawks also have to watch their tail as Hawick and Selkirk are still in the race for second, which will earn a play-off with the second-bottom side in the Premiership to determine who fills the remaining place in the top flight for 2013-14.
Hawick ran in nine tries to defeat Stewart’s Melville 55-21 at Mansfield Park, while Selkirk held out a furious final attack from Kelso for a 15-11 win at Poynder Park. Hamilton won a high-scoring match at Biggar, while Jed-Forest suffered their ninth defeat, away to Hillhead/Jordanhill and remain anchored at the foot of the table with only Biggar for company.
