GHK v Accies – Round 1!
by Webmaster
It was a lovely sunny autumn day and conditions were ripe for a great game of rugby however straight from the offset, Uncle Nigel (sporting a fantastic tan from a week golfing in Tunisia) and captain Ross chassels had a quandary...there were 22 players and a starting 15 had to be selected. After much debate, they went with the following charges:
Rossco, Hermes, Seato, Jamie, Letson, Doigo, Aldo, Mcalpine, Maxi, Franko, Si cad, Arnaud, Hall, Claudio, Pogs
Skipper Chassels delivered a rousing pre match speech and accies were pumped for this encounter however it was GHK who started the game with a bang. They delivered some big hits from the kick off and accies were shell shocked. GHK were awarded for their hard work with a score from the winger and accies were 5 - 0 down...surely nothing to worry about?
The Accies pack were utterly dominant in the line out and driving mauls were in abundance but they couldn't turn this into points. It was GHK again who had the next score after there big centre latched onto a stray pass and after some neat interchange, put there winger in for a try...accies 10 - 0 down....uncle Nigel was starting to sweat!
However he need not worry and Accies were spurred into action. The Accies scrum was a sight to behold and they drove the GHK pack 10 metres over their own line before andy pogs touched down....accies were on the comeback! 10 - 5.
Young Maxi, on his final game before leaving for Oz, was like a man possessed in the loose. Playing at hooker he was tackling and spoiling like a flanker, and his determination was infectious. Things started to click for Accies and line breaks were in their plenty but the final try scoring pass was still elusive. That was until scrum half (and genuinely nice guy) Aldo had a go...he saw a gap at the side of another driving maul and sprinted into action, side stepping and weaving his way to the line for a superb try. 10 - 10.
That took us to half time but Uncle Nigel wasn't happy...the sun had disappeared and his tan was visibly fading...oh to be back on the golf course in sun kissed tunisia!
Accies started the 2nd half strongly and Jamie Doig (after a 6am casino stint - not recommended) was laying the smack down on his opposite man. This was creating gaps for the backs but still the final pass was getting fumbled. With 20 mins to go Accies were getting twitchy. The pack were so dominant at the set piece but GHK were experts in the loose, spoiling ruck after ruck.
After a searing break from the back line, accies were awarded a scrum from 5m out. They drove the GHK boys back so ferociously that they crumbled to dust and the ref awarded a penalty try under the sticks...drunko Doigo duly converted. 17 - 10.
With 15 minutes left Accies could smell the victory however looking around the boys it was plain to see that fitness had deserted most of the team. Uncle Nigel was ravenous for the bonus point and made a few changes, bringing on Mark Gibson and Josh Dickie. Both players made an immediate impact and josh was unlucky not to score a superb try after the ref had adjudged the final pass to be forward...clearly it wasn't, but hey ho!
With 10 minutes left and cramp setting in, it was Aldo who decided he would have another crack. Picking up a loose ball he saw an opportunity and had snipe round the blind. After a few shimmies (or possibly stumbles?) he had 2 to beat...a bosh and a side step later he was over the line and Accies had their bonus point victory. Again Doigo nailed the extra two points. 24 - 10.
Today the Accies pack were dominant and the driving mauls and scrums were a sight to behold however they'll need to buck up in the loose as GHK dominated this fraction of the game.
Uncle Nigel was ecstatic after the game saying "that was a spiffing win chaps"...
It's round two next week with GHK coming over the fence to Accies. Lets get some support out for the boys who are sitting top of the
