THE SCOTSMAN REPORTS
GARY HEATLY
GLASGOW Hawks won the Scotsman Club Sevens at Murrayfield on Saturday thanks to a 7-0 win over Watsonians in the final of an exciting event.
David Wilson's side won the final thanks to a try from Ally Maclay, probably the player of the tournament, in a tense encounter which was played in one seven-minute section.
In a tight encounter, it took an opportunist try from Maclay to break the deadlock.
The former Scotland under-21 internationalist collected the ball in the Watsonians 22 and with just over a minute to play he scored the winner.
Watsonians gave it their all in the last 60 seconds and Craig Sorbie, borrowed from Biggar, almost grabbed an equalising try after Ali Rowe's clever kick had put him through. Sorbie was stopped just short though and Hawks went on to complete the 7-0 win. Earlier in the day on the back pitches Hawick and Stirling Country, led by the impish Ali Miller, were looking good until both were brought down to earth by Hawks and Watsonians respectively.
Hawks ended Hawick's day in the first semi-final, 17-0, thanks to tries from Maclay (2) and Scotland Sevens' man Kenny Sinclair while County were edged out 7-0 by Cammy Mather's men in the second semi. Scrum-half Murray Bringhurst's try was enough to send the Edinburgh side through.
