Scotland Under-21 15 - 27 Stellenbosch Uni
JIM BYRES December 01 2005
Stellenbosch University, the South African national club champions, were too powerful for a depleted Scotland Under-21 side at Peffermill yesterday, despite the visitors having one player sent-off and two sin-binned in the first half.
The home side were missing several key players, but despite their problems, they battled to hold off an extremely physical Stellenbosch side with the back-row trio of Alan MacDonald, Scott Newlands and Ross Miller in outstanding form.
The seeds of a fiery encounter were sown after nine minutes when Francis Louw, the Stellenbosch flanker, was yellow-carded for cynically shoulder-barging Greig Laidlaw in front of the referee.
Stellenbosch looked dangerous on the counter-attack, but after 25 minutes, they lost another man to the sin-bin when Albertus Buckle, their prop, was spotted punching MacDonald.
Not long after, a brawl erupted on the left touchline between David Young, the Scotland prop, and the Stellenbosch hooker, Michael Laubscher.
The South African player was judged to have been the instigator and was shown a red card.
Despite the visitors being down to 13-men for a few minutes, the Scots failed to capitalise. In fact, it was Stellenbosch who opened the scoring with a penalty just before half-time.
MacDonald scored for Scotland minutes after the break, but that was to be the only time the Scots led. Stellenbosch edged in front through a
penalty, before replacement flanker Arno White went over for a try.
King put a penalty over for Scotland, but White grabbed a second try to increase the tourists' lead. Laidlaw later crossed for a try, but Gerrit Jacobs, Stellenbosch's other substitute flanker, sealed the win when he crashed over from an attacking lineout.
