Full Circle for Hawks and Usual Spelling
Today's win means its full circle for Hawks and a new generation have arrived and they have put down a marker of their own
Season 1997/98 saw the beginning of contracted players playing for Premier 1 clubs and Hawks, had managed to pull together a formidable squad. The majority were Scottish representative players with eventual internationalists Glenn Metcalfe, Derek Stark and Murray Wallace joined by Cook Island internationalists Tommy Hayes and Mike Beckham. Hawks won the second division league title, the Scottish Cup and were also 2nd XV league champions. At the end of this very successful season 8 players moved out of Hawks to professional rugby in Scotland and beyond.and the journey to this season 2012-13 had begun
It's also full circle for our incoming president Chas who shortly takes over the baton from Ally Graham as Chas "usual spelling "Afuakwah was a member of that class of 98 (Chas was given that name by a well kent sports scribe the late Brian Meek because of the spelling variations published)
Others to complete the circle include Cammy Little,Mike Blackie and Rory McKay who all played in the inaugural season
But now we have a new generation --then we had Iain Russell and Bill Macdonald coaching now we have Jamie Dempsey and Jimmy Sinclair --then we had Davie Wilson leading now we have Ross Miller then we had Tommy Hayes kicking now we have Mike Adamson the times and the players keep changing but not the satisfaction in a job well done
In 1998 Hawks secured the Division 2 title by beating Kelso 50-25 at Old Anniesland on a March day and 15 years on you have done it again
The three subsequent Premiership titles were all won furth of ANNIESLAND 2004 Goldenacre 2005 Mansefield Park 2006 Meggetland
The Hawks of 2012-13 have now added their name to the record book and have won a small place in the history of Scottish Club Rugby
This time last season we were relegated and now we have returned to the Premiership
This is important not just for Hawks but also for Warriors and rugby in our City the City whose name we bear to have a Glasgow side in the Premiership as we approach 2014 the year that the Second City becomes the First when it takes centre stage in matters sporting
Well done to the players, 1st and 2nds the coaches ,the managers, the medics and the physios --you have done yourselves proud and you have made us proud
