Now in it’s sixth year, the Davidson Chalmers VETS Tournament attracts teams from across Scotland, the UK and further afield to play social VETS rugby.
The tournament began as part of the wider 125th Melrose Sevens anniversary celebrations. Ulster won the first title with many of the side that won the 1999 Heineken Cup final, but lost out in 2009 to a Border Reivers select team that featured a host of Borders internationalists.
The tournament has welcomed some of rugby 7s legends and competitors over the years have included the Fijian maestro WaisaleSerevi, as well as Scottish internationalists the Hastings brothers, Craig Chalmers, Doddie Weir, Graham Shiel andRowen Shepherd.
We are delighted that Davidson Chalmers is supporting the tournament in the role of title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. Andy Drane, Partner at the commercial law firm commented “Since its launch in 2008, the VETS tournament has opened the Melrose Sevens weekend and we look forward to an even greater celebration of rugby in 2013. Veterans rugby is now established as an integral part of social rugby and it is enjoyed nowhere more enthusiastically than in Melrose, the international home of rugby sevens.”
The tournament kicks off at 12 noon at the Annay Road Pitches, Melrose and culminates in Plate, Bowl and Cup finals with The Islay Star defending the cup. Last year’s Bowl was won by The Cayman Harlequins and The Plate was won by Hong Kong Veterans.
