As the buildup to Saturdays derby clash Accies v GHK at New Anniesland continues unabated some of our younger readers might wonder where the K comes from
As trailed the Accies v GH started in 1885 and this was quickly followed by the Accies v Kelvinside Accies in 1888
Kelvinside quickly established itself with one of their first Caps being Harry Rottenburg a man who made his mark in the history of sport by inventing the starting blocks first used in the London Olympics of 1948 and are still used today albeit in electronic fashion
The matches between the Accies were traditionally played on Christmas Day and this writers uncle had to have his Xmas Dinner brought into the Western Infirmary after he came off worse from a tackle by Jimmy Forrest of GA .Jimmy went on to alter the landscape of Milngavie by donating a set of posts to West when they opened Burnbrae in 1960 -- the first man to score behind the posts was GHK' s Honorary president Percy Friebe
The match of 1967 which was reported in a Scotsman recently discovered by GHK supremo Ronnie Gourley features some interesting personalities and rugby luminaries like John Sinclair Sandy Dalziel Chalkie Anderson Randy Laing and Richard Eadie one noted for fleet of foot facing the Simmers Bros, Brian Lockhart Cluggie Anderson and Archie Hardie
Accies beat Kelvinside Accies 6-3 under the old scoring system
The only score of the second half was a try by Kelvinside who capitalised on a knock on from Brian Simmers -- so there you have it
KO at New ANNIESLAND is 3-00 pm
Footnote from Richard
I can't have been running very fast as supported by Shade Munro, Jimmy Martin and Chalky Anderson.
Archie Hardie on his knees who then tackled me later (perfectly fairly) and broke my ribs.
Happy days.
