Heriots took their winning streak to seven in a row as they closed out Glasgow Hawks at Old Anniesland as the home side had to settle for another losing bonus point.
Hawks opened the scoring early with a try from wing Haddon McPherson in the fourth minute as he went over in the far corner after Hawks put the ball wide from a solid srum in midfield. Scott Wight missed a difficult conversion.
Both sides struggled with handling in the blustery conditions, but Heriots were quicker to take advantage. It was no surprise when they pulled ahead in 17 minutes as centre Keith Buchan finished off a backs move, Graham Wilson added the extras as the game staggered sclerotically toward half-time.
The second half saw Heriots come out much the stronger side and effectively killed the tie at the start of the second half with a Buchan penalty in 44 minutes. Then after the kick off they came right back up up to the hawks’ goal-line before Max Learmont went over from close range less than a minute later. This 10 point lead was to prove to be enough to see off Hawks despite a late rally.
Andrew Linton brought the scores close with another short distance try, but Hawks just didn’t seem to be able to close the gap.
Twice in the closing moments the home side were called back by the referee for penalties which were as much bizarre rather than strange. Robert Beattie can feel especially hard done by as he broke at pace and seemed to be under the posts for the score.
All that was left in the match was and exchange of penalties and Hawks were left with yet another bonus point and a feeling of déjà vu all over again.
