Currie poured further grief on Hawks as they took a valuable 4 points and hauled themselves up the table and closed ion on the Glasgow side. Whilst they are not in the relegation zone they do need to pick something up from their last three matches to be secure in the top flight.
The match was played in atrocious conditions on a heavy pitch but the men from Balerno adapted better to the state of the field. Hawks were reeling early on as Currie broke through the midfield with ease, James Semple slipped past his man putting the ball to Ethan Pollock. The inside-centre breezed past two tacklers himself as he put the scoring pass to David Cherry. The hooker was over with ease and Hawks were fortunate when George Horne missed the conversion.
Hawks spent most of the opening quarter on the back foot, when they entered Currie territory the visiting defence were on top and Hawks spilled the ball under pressure. In 12 minutes Horne extended the lead with a penalty.
Hawks started to play smarter rugby us they played the conditions a bit more sensibly. A series of scrums just on the Currie line saw the visitor’s penalised as the referee awarded a Penalty Try, with Jack Steele adding the extras. It was done to one point.
The second half started as poorly as the first with Currie pulling even further ahead in the 2nd minute after the re-start. This time Pollock eluded a sleeping Hawks defence at pace scoring with ease and making a mockery of the conditions. Hawks had a let off as Horne again failed to convert.
This respite was short lived, Horne scored a second penalty on the hour and the losing bonus slipped out of touch.
Whilst Hawks battered away at Currie the rror count remained high and they spurned the chance of a kick at goal when a try seemed to be at best elusive.
As the clock wound down the only consolation that could be taken from the result was that other results elsewhere had not harmed the cause. There are 3 league matches over the next 7 weeks and Hawks will have to work hard to secure their place in the RBS Premiership.
