Hawks Herron called in Scotland7s

Hawks Neil Herron has been called into Scotland 7s squad along with two of our drafted pros Finn Gillies and Scott Wight

Centre, Neil Herron will be in with a chance of winning his first international sevens cap, in Tokyo next weekend (22-23 March), having been named in head coach, Stephen Gemmell’s side to travel for the sixth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

Herron is also joined by Glasgow Warriors players Finlay Gillies and Scott Wight, who were involved in the last round of tournaments on the circuit.

Gemmell said: “I’m pleased to be able to name Neil [Herron] in this squad for the first time. He worked extremely hard to get back to full fitness and has had game time with the Scotland under-20 team in the 6 Nations.

Neil is an exciting young player and I’m looking forward to see what he can bring on the World Series.

“We also appreciate Glasgow Warriors’ support in releasing two players to travel with us.

The remainder of the side is made up of full-time professionals and club players, with Chris Dean returning for the first time since, Dubai and Heriot’s’ and British Army's Joseva Nayacavou returning having been involved in Port Elizabeth in December.

Colin Gregor will once again lead the team as captain.

Gemmell continued: “I have named a familiar group of players in this squad who work together everyday and know how we’re capable of playing. Training has gone well, so we now need to put any previous disappointments behind us and move forward.

We have another big opportunity against England, Australia and Spain and although we’re third seeds in the pool and know how difficult the matches will be, we are as ever be aiming to qualify for the Cup competition.”

Scotland 7s will play England (1.44am), Australia (5.24am) and Spain (9.14am) on day one (Saturday 22 March) of the Tokyo 7s. All times are local.
