Currie beat deadline in pursuit of Caldwell
BILL LOTHIAN

CURRIE have beaten the BT Premiership signing deadline to put flying winger Geoff Caldwell in line for a return to Malleny Park at the start of the new year.

Prolific try-scorer Caldwell, an ex-Scotland under-21 cap, left Currie a few years ago to become an integral part of Melrose's side.

But it is emerging that Caldwell increasingly appears ready to return to the club that gave him a leg up to representative honours with a Currie source confirming that the player's registration has been lodged with the Murrayfield authorities subject to completing a signing deal.

The source said: "We are confident that a deal will be worked out that has Geoff back to help us both step up a bid to banish any relegation worries.

"Transfers had to be registered with the SRU by December 16 and we have submitted the appropriate papers so it seems like all systems go for his return against Aberdeen Grammar FPs at Malleny Park on January 7." That clash is vital for Currie, who are fifth from bottom, five points ahead of Aberdeen, who lie fourth bottom in a season where three teams are due to go down under reconstruction plans.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, Watsonians are bidding to close an eight-point gap on Glasgow Hawks but their chances - despite the Anniesland side having a game in hand - should not be written off in pledging to stay the title course.

That's the view of one of the players who has put the Myresiders in a challenging position, Colin Gregor, as he looked ahead to a busy 2006 also involving Scotland sevens and Glasgow Warriors pro-team commitments.

"I hope to be back at Watsonians at some stage this season and the ideal scenario would be to complete a BT Premiership and Commonwealth medal double," said stand off Gregor at the announcement this week of a Scottish team for the Melbourne Games.

"It must count that Watsonians are playing well and all we can do is hope that Hawks slip up with, ironically, a match looming for them against our rivals Heriot's, who are good enough to do us a favour."
