Glasgow Accies 2nd XV vs Glasgow Accies Exiles 2nd XV
Chairman\'s Welcome
On behalf of the Glasgow Academical Club I welcome you to New Anniesland today for the annual match against the Glasgow Accies Exiles XV. I hope that you had a most enjoyable Christmas and that 2006 will prove to be a happy, healthy and successful year.
The rugby year to date has seen some mixed success in terms of results and we currently lie in 5th position in the league. We still have hopes of promotion as we are beginning to play some attractive attacking rugby and confidence is growing. This is a young and experimental side with a number of players having to learn to play in a new position particularly in the front row.
The Boxing Day fixture is one of the most eagerly awaited games of the year. It is the one occasion when members of the Club, who play their rugby away from New Anniesland, can demonstrate how much they have learned since they were last here.
There are a number of players currently in the Hawks 1st XV and we congratulate them on back to back Scottish Championships and their excellent start to defending the championship this year. The win last Saturday at Ayr was a notable achievement.
Today we welcome home from New Zealand Bill Howie who will referee today’s game and congratulate him on his recent marriage to Cushla who is in Scotland to meet Bill’s relatives and friends who were unable to travel to New Zealand for the wedding.
2006 is to be a touring year for Accies. Firstly in March we will be playing in Rome against HDI Capitolina’s Development XV before going on the see the Italy v Scotland 6 Nations International. In May the Stags and 2ndXV have organised a tour to Poland. There are still places available for players. Contact David Gourlay if you are interested. If you would like to support the tours financially please buy a ticket for the ‘200 Club’ from any of the players. The price is £20 per share and there are still 11 draws to go.
The Club is always in need of funds and if you are in a position to purchase an advertising board for the perimeter of the ground please ask me for details
Finally our thanks go to our sponsors, Vodka Wodka and Gibson’s Pension and Investments, your support is greatly appreciated by the Club.
I hope you enjoy the game today and I look forward to meeting you in the Clubhouse later and hopefully at the Disco tonight starting at 7pm
