REDS LOSE TO CLASSY FALCONS

Caledonia Reds 22 Newcastle Falcons ‘A’ 40
A starting Newcastle ‘A’ outfit that contained the likes of Phil Godman, Sean Brown, Harry Spencer and Tom Catterick, all regulars in the Newcastle 1st team squad, took on a Reds team who were looking forward to testing themselves against a professional side.
Dan Temm, Harry Bate, Sean Brown, Tom Catterick, Matthew Charters and Simon Hammersley all crossed for the visitors with the Reds responding with four tries from Ben Addison, Danny Levison, Andy Dymock and Fraser Lyle.
The Caledonia Reds started strongly with a long period of sustained pressure in the Falcons half but the Falcons defense stood strong as the Reds players struggled to breech the gain line. Falcons’ Kiwi back-row Temm got the scoring underway after 10 minutes, taking a neat pass from Godman to touchdown, before Sean Brown sliced through Caledonia’s rear-guard thanks to Hammersley’s inch-perfect offload. It was soon 26-0 with Catterick notching up try number three for the afternoon following a line-break from Hammersley. Harry Spencer, who came on as a second half replacement during yesterday’s Aviva Premiership clash against Wasps at Adams Park, was the creator for the fourth score of the contest after his pass to Charters put the flanker clean through to make it 33-0.
The Reds came back strongly and reduced the deficit to 33-5 with a try from left wing Ben Addison, the pack instrumental in their first score of the day. But back came the Falcons, and full-back Hammersley scooted in under the posts to make it 40-5. However, with the Reds growing into the game in the second half, three tries in the last quarter of the match from Caledonia closed the gap to 40-22. The first try was scored by the outstanding Reds number 8 Danny Levison in a close range effort. The second came for scrum half Andy Dymock who went over for a neatly worked try on the blind side from a dominant Caledonia scrum, 5 metres out. With the last play of the game, some excellent build up play was rewarded when inside centre Fraser Lyle broke through and beat the last defender to round off a fantastic second half fightback.
