Scotland under19 lost their first international of the season when they were defeated 15-5 by Italy under19 at the Tre Fontane ground in Rome this afternoon.
The Scots’ only points came from a try by lock Richard Vernon (Stewart’s-Melville FP) midway through the second-half.
Head coach Peter Wright reflected: “I thought we competed well against a pack that was much bigger than us. At vital times, however, we failed as a team to execute things in the danger zone, both in attack and defence.
“This result has to serve as a reality check to the players as we prepare towards the World Championship in Dubai in the spring.”
Wright felt it was a better performance by the Scots compared to what they had achieved the last time the two sides met and identified the first-half today – when the Scots had 75-80% of the game yet could not score – as critical.
“Overall we did not stick to our game-plan long enough. We tried too much to take them on physically when we were never going to beat them that way,” he added.
