Hi, Happy New Year to all you dear readers here on Glasgow's premier rugby website.
Sorry to have been absent for the last few weeks, as many of you will be aware my dad's be not too well and I haven't been able to keep up as well as I would have liked. However, here's hoping that I can add some "insight" to the run in to the 2005-06 Premier Championships for the Glasgow District sides involved.

All this said as the fog swoops in around me, I think I'll be watching a bit of Setanta if I can on Saturday as I think the frost will lead to postponements.

Premier One

Biggar v Melrose
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Hartree Mill

Biggar have possibly done enough to stay up in a normal season, however with 3 dropping this year they need to win their remaining home fixtures to be sure. I think they will starting with this game. For a number of reasons, one Gary Parker will want to remind Rose of what they have lost. He is also quoted as looking for a step up to full-time coaching and Biggar in the reconstructed "2nd" will not help. Hartreemill should prove a step too far for an inconsistent Rose

Previous game: Melrose 43 Biggar 32

Prediction: Biggar by 7.

Heriots v Glasgow Hawks
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Goldenacre

The previous fixture was probably Hawks best of the season, crushing the life out of the Goldenacre challenge and ending a run of "indifferent" wins. Since then the champions have lost to Sonians and struggled to take Ayr's unbeaten home record last time out. Both sides might struggle in the post Christmas period as players try to find match sharpness. However, Goldenacre offers a huge expanse for the likes of Maclay, Gordon and Low to run amok, when supplied with the ball. In these circumstances Hawks could win in a high scoring encounter. Hawks may have an eye looking at events in Myreside as Hawick challenge Sonians, but they must look to themselves to win this.

Previous game: Glasgow Hawks 44 Heriot's 19

Prediction: Try bonus and a 10 point win.

Stirling County v Ayr
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Bridgehaugh

Ayr will be smarting at the loss of their unbeaten record at Millbrae certainly I think Craig Redpath has plenty from that game to motivate the players with. On the same day, County surrendered to a 20 point lead to Muir in comedy Italian army style. In the first half they played well especially Addison and Archibald, in the second it would be insulting to woeful performances to make the comparison. Well beaten last time I think it'll be more of the same for County as Ayr steamroller them.

Previous game: Ayr 39 Stirling County 10

Prediction: Ayr with a try bonus and by 20

Premier Two

Cartha Queen's Park v Kelso
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Dumbreck

Trust this year to happen for CQP now. League reconstruction will deny the second placed side the glory of going upand it is hard to see them becoming champs. However, stranger things happen and they need to bag sides like Kelso to stay in the race. Home advantage and a previous win should see CQP win, they
need the bonus.

Previous result: Kelso 13 Cartha Queens Park 22

Prediction: 15 point win, without a bonus.

Berwick v GHA
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Scremerston

I've always felt that for the sakle of the District it has been important to have at least 2 strong city sides in Premier 1. GHA's relegation and consequent slde have been disappointing. The loss of players elsewhere means that climbing back is a struggle. Here we see a game which exemplifies their problems. They should beat Berwick but today I think they'll lose.

Previous result: GHA 39 Berwick 23

Prediction: Berwick by 6 points.

Hillheah/Jordanhill v Dundee HSFP
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Hughenden

It is probably too much to hope that Hills could give CQP a boost with a surprise win at Hughie's den. But for the district it would be great. That said Dundee have probably shown more than most thht they could compete in the top league. I think the Mayfield marmalade eaters will prove too much for Hills and complete an impressive double.

Previous result: Dundee HSFP 59 Hillhead/Jordanhill 20

Prediction: Dundee by 16 with a try bonus.

Premier Three

Edinburgh University v West of Scotland
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Peffermill

West are going well and are again, unfortunate they will get no rward for their effort at the end of the season. This should be one way traffic, despite the narrow result last time out. The Uni boys will be coming back from... If they are even back.

Previous score: West of Scotland 22 Edinburgh University 21

Prediction: West by 30 and a try bonus.

Hamilton v Musselburgh
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Laigh Bent

Hamilton are taking this league by storm. Coming up with Ellon last year, this is the team I would already nominate as the team of the year for The District rugby awards. They should carry on with no difficulty in this one.

Previous result: Musselburgh 10 Hamilton 34

Prediction: Hamilton by 30 with a try bonus.

Dunfermline v East Kilbride
Friday, 6th January 2006 at McKane Park

No contest, I'd be surpirsed if EK score at all.

Previous score: East Kilbride 13 Dunfermline 22

Prediction: Dunf by 40pts.

Cambuslang v Kirkcaldy
Friday, 6th January 2006 at Coats Park

Kirkcaldy are a side capable of playing far higher than Cambuslang, and Cambuslang aren't. This should see a similar result to the previous encounter.

Previous Result: Kirkcaldy 39 Cambuslang 6

Prediction: Kirkcaldy by 20.
