WEEKEND REVIEW FROM PHALL

Courtesy of www.glasgowwarriors.com

Well I made a complete pig's ear of my predictions last week Prem 1 I got every one wrong. Hawks lost at Heriot's through some inadequate defensive work. Ayr were well beaten by a resurgent County and Biggar lost by a point to Rose.
I was better in Prem 2 although GHA drew a match I thought they'd lose. In Prem 3 I was more accurate for results but way out on the scores.

This weekend Hawks have a chance to put the wheels back on the bus when they entertain Hawick and with Sonians closing slowly but surely a big win is needed.

Personally, I'll be in Dublin, with the Editorial team and Big John to see Glasgow try to pull a morale boosting win against Leinster.

Premier One

Aberdeen GSFP v Biggar
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Rubislaw

Grammar had another postponed fixture last week, which could put them under pressure later in the year. With no action in over 3 weeks it could be a painful run-out for the home side. Biggar have had problems on the road but a win here could see them leapfrog the Aberdonians. Last week's narrow loss to Rose will still smart a bit but I fancy them for a rare away win although probably as narrowly as last week.

Previous game: Biggar 26 Aberdeen GSFP 25

Prediction: Biggar by one score. No try bonus.

Ayr v Heriot's
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Millbrae

I was surprised at Ayr's defeat last week, not simply for the result but also in it's manner. However, I fully expect them to bounce back and continue their impressive home form. Heriot's struggled at times against Hawks up front and will be pushed by an Ayr side who will not want to register a second home defeat.

Previous game: Heriot's 48 Ayr 3

Prediction: Ayr by 7.

Glasgow Hawks v Hawick
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Old Anniesland

To paraphrase a question once asked of George Best. "Hawks, where did it all go wrong?". Okay so that is very unfair. Having predicted that Low and Gordon would rampage last week neither played as they both were injured. That is problematic because Ally Maclay and Iain Kennedy are struggling out wide as neither has played much wing work.

Hawick are frequently tipped as Scotland's "form" team, really? Starting with the defeat last week to Sonians they seem fragile against smarter sides. They surrendered an 11 point lead against Hawks in as many second half minutes at Mansfield and I can't see them doing any better at Anniesland.

Previous game: Hawick 16 Glasgow Hawks 29

Prediction: Hawks by 14.

Premier Two

GHA v Gala
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Braidholm

Not a lot separates these two sides who oh so recently locked horns against one another in Prem 2. last season I did a stint for Radio Borders after a GHA v Gala match at Braidholm and having seen GHA win with some great back play tipped them to be dark horses in the challenge for Prem 1. Plus ca change, in the predictions department.

That said the sides are now pretty evenly matched and I fancy home advantage to guide GHA to a narrow but much needed win

Previous game: Gala 30 GHA 15

Prediction: GHA by a score.

Kelso v Hillhead/Jordanhill
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Poynder Park

It is a long way home from Poynder Park if you lose and many from Glasgow have made the journey. That said Hills have come up with some surprises but home advantage should prove crucial. Kelso are desperate for points and aren't too far behind the Glasgow side. I think Kelso will shade it.

Previous game: Hillhead/Jordanhill 13 Kelso 9

Prediction: Kelso by a 7 points.

Selkirk v Cartha Q P
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Philiphaugh

CQP easily defeated a struggling Kelso last week and the trip to Selkirk should see them come back with more than a Lunn's Bannock. 5 points still behind Dundee and it is likely that they will need Dundee to stumble if they are to win the league. Certainly they have to win this to keep the pressure on. A tie at Philiphaugh can be tough. I think CQP will win by not by a lot.

Previous game: Cartha Queens Park 19 Selkirk 3

Prediction: CQP by 10 without a bonus.

Premier Three

East Kilbride v Edinburgh Univ
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Torrance House

Edinburgh were weakened against west as the students got over their holidays and too much TLC from mater. They should be stronger against an EK side who are the only team lower than them. It's hard to say who'll be worst, so a prediction?

Previous game: Edinburgh University 20 East Kilbride 7

Prediction: Too close to call.

Ellon v Cambuslang
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Meadows Way

Cambuslang are marginally better than those discussed previously. Ellon are a lot better and at home.

Previous game: Cambuslang 16 Ellon 18

Prediction: Ellon by 20 and with a bonus.

Livingston v Hamilton
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Almond Park

It's hard to believe that Livingston were challenging hard this time last season, but they have fallen back and are up against the form side. Hamilton had to battle with Musselburgh last week but should take this one in their stride.

Previous game: Hamilton 33 Livingston 10

Prediction: Hamilton by 10.

West of Scotland v RHC
Friday, 13th January 2006 at Burnbrae

2nd placed West have the easy beating of RHC and should give the home support a bit to cheer. The side have pulled it together with the exception of the loss inn the Cup to Ardrossan. Whilst promotion is not available, a good draw could see Burnbrae organising a trip to Murrayfield later this year.

Previous game: RHC 6 West of Scotland 17

Prediction: West for five point win.
