West 2nd’s Win at Glasgow Accies

The 2nd XV travelled to Glasgow Accies and achieved their first away win of the league campaign.
There were a number of enforced changes leading up to the game on Saturday due to the unavailability of players through study commitments and a number of players succumbing to a flu virus. The final call off being within 1hr of the kick-off meant a major re-shuffle of the forwards with Graeme Carmichael moving from 2nd row to front row and putting in a great shift for the duration of the game.
The game itself proved to be frustrating with West put on the back foot for the 1st 20mins of the game, however solid defence meant that Accies were unable to penetrate the line. West were then able to turn the ball over and score an opportunist try and conversion through Ewan Smith. West then started to play a more cohesive game and had a number of goods breaks through both the forwards and backs. Another turnover on halfway led to the backs running direct and committing defenders to work a one on one with Scott Hunter beating the last man to score under the post which was dually converted by Ewan Smith. The door should have been closed just before half time with a scintillating run by Scott Hunter ripping the Accies defence apart however poor decision making meant that the scoring opportunity was lost.
West went into the 2nd half 14-0 up.
The 2nd half was disappointing with basic errors being made leading to Accies scoring two converted tries and tying the game with 10 minutes to play. However to their credit West continued to apply pressure and were rewarded when Oisin Quinn charged down a kick and beat the opposition to score under the posts, converted by Ewan Smith. Accies were camped within the West 22m for the last 5 minutes but were not able to cross the goal line, in fact the only time the ball did cross the line was by Ali Todd who produced a remarkable clearance kick from the back of a 5 m scrum which ended up going 15m backwards over the dead ball line – sublime technique.!!!
Final Score West 21 – Glasgow Accies 14
