GLASGOW HAWKS S2, 18 - STIRLING COUNTY S2, 0
I am pretty sure that I have recorded the correct result above. There was
some "discussion" on the car journey home and I have been assured by the
boy that my age has affected my ability to count.I was sure that we had
scored 6 tries but he tells me that there were only5!
The conditions under foot on Sunday afternoon were pretty miserable but at
least the rain held off for the majority of the game.
Not long after the game got under way there was a rather nasty incedent in
which Max Martin was "tackled" around the neck and held and received an
uppercut to the eye which meant that he could take no further part in the
game. This was a tough encounter and threatened at times to get ugly,
however good refereeing made sure that rugby was the winner.
The Hawks only scored once in the first half with Rory Stewart forcing his
way over from close in.There then followed a period of sustained pressure
by the County boys who showed a great deal of skill and determination in
their efforts to score.Hawks defence was equal to the task and the cheer
that went up from the home team when the half time whistle was blown
reflected their satisfaction in sticking to their task of defending their
line.
The second half was a more one sided tale with the hawks backs and forwards
dominating and running in a further 4(or was it 5?) scores with Joff
Stenhouse converting 3.My pick of the tries was scored byJonny Byrne
Leitch. The ball having been won against the head was fed all the way out
to the wing where Jonny still had a bit of work to do and his strength took
him over the line. A true team score.
The Pack did superbly well throughout the game, stealing the majority of
line out ball and the Hawks hooker Cammy Crozier("the boy") as well as
holding his own took 6 against the head in the second half alone.A great
front 5 effort in the mud.The handling in the backs and the commitment to
the tackle shown also deserve mention.
All in all a great start to 2006 with the squad picking up where they left
off in 2005.
Training will take place as usual on Thursday night at 6:45 and we play
Uddingston on Sunday meeting at 12 noon KO 1:00pm.
