BT CUP ROUND 4 PREVIEW

Currie will be looking for history to repeat itself when they take on BT Premiership Division 1 leaders Glasgow Hawks in the fourth round of the BT Cup at Malleny Park tomorrow (Saturday 21 January).

Last season Currie downed the Hawks 24-19 to end their hopes of a league and cup double.

Currie’s crucial try that day was scored by Scotland under-21 full-back Dougie Flockhart and he strikes an upbeat note ahead of tomorrow’s tie.

“We always seem to give Hawks a good game. We tend to up our game when we are playing against better teams like Hawks. They have strength in depth and are consistent but we know we’re capable of a good performance,” he said.

The match is the prelude too to the clubs clashing in the league at Malleny Park just one week later.

Elsewhere in the fourth round draw there are two further all Premier Division 1 clashes between Melrose and Biggar – the Greenyards men edging a tight encounter 22-21 when they met on league business earlier this month – and Stirling County v Aberdeen GSFP.

Those seeking upsets might look to Memorial Field where third placed side in BT National League Division 1, Ardrossan Accies, take on BT Premier Division 2 Kelso. Ardrossan know what it is to reach a Murrayfield finals day having won the BT Bowl last season.

At Pennypit Park in Prestonpans, Jim Hay brings his Hawick side to the club that gave him his first step on the coaching ladder and who are currently in second place in BT National League Division 1.

“I coached PL back in season 1997-98 and really enjoyed it. I have happy memories of my time there. We’ve not got our troubles to seek with injuries just now so I’m hoping there are no shocks this weekend,” Hay said.

PL secretary Bill Barclay said: “It’s obviously a huge challenge but our players are confident.”

Tomorrow also sees round 1 of the BT Shield and round 2 of the BT Bowl.
