Scotland succumbed to a blend of England power play up front and skilful handling behind the scrum to lose their opening match in the IRB u19 World Championship at Kings Park in Durban this afternoon.

The Scots seemed to struggle more than their English opponents with the oppressive humidity level at 75 per cent but it was the sterngth of the England front five and the finishing by the outside backs that killed off the Scotland challenge.

On the plus side Scotland competed throughout and had notable contributions from Stewart\'s-Melville flanker Ross Rennie, Newcastle winger Cammy Johnston and replacement Greg Cottrell from Hawick, the last-named making an impressive try-saving tackle on recently signed Gloucester centre Anthony Allen.

Scotland coach Peter Wright, although disappointed was not downhearted. He said: \"We attacked well at times and looked dangerous on occasions behind the scrum.

\"But we lost too much soft ball in and around the contact area particularly in the second half. We competed well in the first half but made too many silly errors. I still think we can compete against Wales on Tuesday,\" he added.

Scotland led England 6-5 after 29 minutes with a penalty and drop goal by The Borders stand-off James King to a third minute try for England by full back Shane Geraghty. But a penalty by stand-off Daniel Cipriani and his conversion of a try by centre Tom Youngs gave England a 15-6 lead.

An unconverted try by Geraghty from turnover ball stretched England\'s lead before Scotland put together their best attack, Cottrell supplying a long pass that resulted in a try for winger Johnston.

Thereafter England stepped up their pace to finish strongly with tries by replacements Nick Abendandon and Adam Powell and one conversion from Cipriani.
