LEWIS STUART ON GLASGOW SIGNINGS

Lamont heads long list of Glasgow activity
By Lewis Stuart

THE flood of defections from Scottish rugby was halted yesterday when Glasgow announced that Rory Lamont, their latest squad member to win an international starting place, headlines a raft of 11 who have signed for the club. Having been picked up at the start of the season on a short-term contract, the younger of the Lamont brothers has excelled and the club have made so secret that, after losing Sean, his older brother, to Northampton, they were anxious to formalise his position on a long-term basis.
The brothers played together for the first time in December in a club match but less than three months later had swapped the light blue of Glasgow for the dark blue of Scotland, becoming the nineteenth pair of Scottish brothers to win caps together, with Rory joining the ranks of those who have scored on their international debuts.

Unlike Sean, who arrived at Glasgow with something of a reputation after representing Scotland in the Commonwealth Games sevens competition, Rory was an unknown after being struck by a pelvic injury that stopped him playing for the previous two seasons.

However, in a couple of trial matches for Glasgow Hawks, he was so impressive that he was snapped up by the professional club, quickly establishing himself as one to watch despite missing the registration deadline for the Heineken Cup and many believe he will be the better of the brothers.

The club also confirmed that Craig Hamilton, the Newcastle lock who was capped last summer, has completed the formalities of joining them. In the cap brigade, they are joined by Graeme Morrison, Graeme Beveridge and Andrew Henderson, who are renewing their contracts, as are Scott Lawson and Calvin Howarth, who have been keeping Gordon Bulloch and Dan Parks, the Scotland players, out. The club are bringing in four players from club level, Colin Shaw, Fergus Thomson and Steve Swindall from Glasgow Hawks, plus Ben Prescott from Aberdeen.
