HAWKS UNDER 15S BEAT GARNOCK IN GLASGOW CUP

Glasgow Hawks Under 15s took the first step to adding more silverware to
the Hawks trophy cabinet with a 30 -7 win over a stuffy Garnock side at Old
Anniesland yesterday in the Glasgow Cup

The Hawks squad had not been together for 3 weeks and their rustiness showed
throughout the match.

Hawks got off to the perfect start when Phillip Gillies crashed over for
the opening try after 5 minutes,. The try was the result of sustained Hawks
pressure right from kick off.

Try number two came courtesy of a well worked lineout move, scored by Kris
MacDonald.

Garnock restarted, kicking long into the Hawks 22, where Euan Robertson gathered
the ball and decided to go for a run. Euan's run took him past and through
the entire Garnock defence leaving him to face the full back and wing in
the Garnock 22. Euan then decided to to perform a hitch kick that would probably
have won him gold at the winter olympics, and side step at almost the same
time. This unique move totally bamboozled the remaining two defenders (and
those on the touch line) and allowed Euan to stroll under the posts. One
of the trys of the season.

Even though Hawks were now 15 points clear Garnock continued to press and
were forcing Hawks into rushing passes and knock -on's. Hawks were also struggling
at break downs giving Garnock the advantage and confindence.

Just as Garnock were building up some steam the Hawks forwards finally got
their game together and after some fine driving play by Kris MacDonald, Phillip
Gillies emerged to charge over the line for try number 4.

None of the tries had been converted, but Kerr Gossman had managed to strike
both sides of the same upright in two of his attempts.

Half Time:

Glasgow Hawks 20 Garnock 0

The second half resumed in the same manner as the first with some gutsy defending
and tackling from both sides, and Garnock still causing Hawks problems.

Hawks pulled further ahead after the pack set up camp in the Garnock half
and the ball was spread across the back line for David Currie to score in
the corner.

Garnock continued to attack Hawks at every opportunity and were rewarded
with a well worked try which was converted from a difficult angle.

Hawks had the final say in the scoring when Ollie McInnes finished off another
fine handling move by the Hawks.

The game ended in similar fashion to Saturday at Meggatland with Garnock
putting the Hawks line under pressure but unable to get past the Hawks defence.

Final Score

Glasgow Hawks 30 Garnock 7

Hawks now play Hamilton (away) in the next round. We'll be checking that
there is no G Hawkes in the Hamilton line up.

This was not a great performance by the Hawks. The effects of the three week
lay off were apparent, the team played too loose, allowed Garnock to dominate
the break downs and force Hawks into too many handling errors.Coach Jim Gossman
has arranged extra training session to bring the team up to pace.

However, we are in the next round and eveyone involved with the squad knows
that we can and must improve if we want to win the cup.
