Glasgow Hawks Under 15s swept into the Glasgow District Cup semi final by
seeing of Ayr by 52-19.
This was a magnificent 21 man squad performance scoring a total of 10 tries,
against Division 1 opposition.
Stephen Dwyer set the stage with a superb solo run down the right wing to
open the scoring.
Four further first half tries, a brace from both Kris MacDonald and Euan
Robertson took the Hawks to 25 points.
Ayr replied with 2 converted tries, one under the posts resulting from slack
Hawks defence, and a second out on the wing which resulted in a magnificent
conversion kick from a difficult angle by the Ayr kicker.
Half Time: Hawks 25 Ayr 14
Hawks made 6 half time substitutions, but the commitment and skill levels
did not fall as they continued to press Ayr back into defence.
The second half saw a further 5 tries scored by Hawks.
Kris MacDonald and Euan Roberston both completing their hat-tricks; David
Currie scoring try number 7 after some quite superb handling by forwards
and backs, converted by Euan Robertson.
Hawks then scored the try of the game.
Ayr kicked long into Hawks goal area, Hawks touched down and as Ayr moved
over to Hawks left wing expecting a 22 restart, James Hendry took a quick
tap restart, retreived the ball and set off down the right flank and as the
first Ayr tackler made his move, ofloaded to David Currie on the outside
who took the ball on before releasing the wonderful Callum Kerr to stride
to the line and touch down in the corner. Three players from 22 to try -
superb! Fortunately as Ayr were lined up on the opposite side of the park,
referee Mr. J. Gossman had an uniterrupted view of proceedings as he raced
over the half way line, keeping up with play, as the conversion attempt was
being lined up. The players have been warned not use the move again - if
Mr. Gossman is refereeing!
Ayr pulled back an unconverted try, before Douglas Schreiber finished off
the scoring in almost the same manner in which Hawks started, with a barnstorming
run down the left wing through tackle after tackle before scoring just wide
of the posts.
Final Score:
Glasgow Hawks 52 (10 tries, 1conversion) Ayr 19 (3tries, 2 conversions)
This was a fine performance by the young Hawks, but we know that there are
areas in which we need to improve. Those will be worked on before the semi
final.
Our thanks to Neil Howie and his Ayr squad for a fine sporting game of rugby.
Hawks would also like to thank Glasgow Accies groundsman Robert and New Anniesland
caterer Ken for their assistance in arranging today's fixture.
Final thanks to Scott Inglis for his message of support - hope we have repaid
you; and John Roxburgh for attending today's match - we hope you enjoyed
the game.
Next week Biggar at Anniesland, then the Semi.
Kind Regards
Gordon
